Ellie Tucker and Nolan Cook have been friends since third grade. Now at fifteen Nolan is aspiring to be an NBA basketball player and Ellie a novel writer. After an indiscretion from Ellie’s mum her dad decided to move away from Savannah to San Diego. Before the move Ellie and Nolan wrote each other a letter which they buried under a tree. They promised each other they would come back in eleven years and dig it up and read the letters. Ellie move away and lost touch with Nolan and her mum. Ellie wrote three letters to Nolan and did not get a response. Nolan spent the next eleven years pinning for Ellie. Ellie distraught and lonely rebelled against her dad and turned her back on God. Coming up to the eleven year anniversary when they both buried their letter will they both go to the spot to retrieve those letters and get a chance to meet up again.
The book started off with enough tension and conflict to keep the pages. It’s an easy to read book. Good characterisation, the author shows the motives of Ellie’s parents without demonising them. Nolan Cook’s commitment to his faith and basketball was admirable. The characters came full circle to create a happy ending. I can’t fault the book on anything Kingsbury once again has done a good job.
