Power to witness

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Jesus told the people to wait on the Holy Spirit as He will give them power to witness. To witness means to share the gospel with people who do not know Him. We see an example of witnessing in Acts 4 when Peter who was full of the Holy Spirit boldly declared to the people that the lame man was healed by the name of Jesus and proceeded to share the power of God

Tips on how to witness.

  1. Break the ice

Jesus did so effectively with the woman at the well in John 4. Jesus used what they had in common. They were both at the well for water. Their discussion about water came round to them discussing salvation. Sometimes people are defensive when you bring up Christ right up the bat, its better to create a rapport before sharing the love of Christ with them. The key is to be led by the Holy Spirit.

2. Always  use the word and avoid arguments

Do not get caught in the trap of theological debates. The gospel is simple. Keep to the simplicity of it which is Christ died to pay for our sins. He was crucified and He resurrected . Here are some scriptures to use when witnessing

John 3:3 – Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God

Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life

Acts 16:31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

3. Pray the sinners prayer

When a person states that they believe they need salvation say the sinners’ prayer with them before inviting them to church. Explain that when they say the prayer the Holy Spirit comes immediately to recreate their spirit and they become born again. This is a sample of what you can pray.

Dear God I believe that I am a sinner. I believe that Jesus died and rose again from the dead come into my heart Lord Jesus. Cleanse me from my sin. Be my Lord and Saviour from this day on and help me to live for you daily. Amen

I’ve learned that writing doesn’t always begin with clarity it often begins with curiosity. Some days the words come easily, other days they hide. But if I keep showing up, something honest always finds its way through.
